Wire Mask | Prohibits the wearer from being a good listener- unable to make eye contact because of the blinders, cannot nod in response without being puncturing the skin on your neck. The ears are left uneffected to highlight the frustration of having a person hear you but not listen to what you are saying.
5'x3': Slip casts of insulin pens hung by ripped chiffon fabric on a wooden backdrop. It is an abstract graph of my average blood sugars over the years. In the beginning of my diagnosis, my blood sugars were lower and, therefore, I was healthier. Over the years it became harder to take care of myself so my blood sugar levels increased. As a result, my body is deteriorating, which I represented by increasingly destroyed slip casts towards the end of the "graph." The blank space in the beginning of the board represents a time when I didn't have this constant worry of being sick hanging over my head (which was demonstrated by the hanging insulin pens). There is little space towards the end of the piece because I often fear that I will have little time left if I don't begin taking care of myself. Recently my blood sugars have been lower (I have been taking better care of myself) which is why the "graph" lowers at the end. Still, the insulin pens at the end are destroyed because the damage that has been done to my body cannot be undone.
